TEHRAN (FNA)- Representative of senior Shiite cleric Grand Ayatollah Ali Sistani in Iraq's holy city of Karbala underlined the necessity for the removal of Iraq from the Chapter 7 of the UN Charter.
Addressing Iraqi worshippers on Friday, Sheikh Abdolmehdi Karbalaei called on Iraq's neighbors and the UN Security Council to exclude the country from chapter VII of the UN Charter.
"The issues that put Iraq under this chapter were security and international threats posed by Iraq under the former (Baath) regime, but they exist no more now," Karbalaei stated.
"Accordingly, the Iraqi people expect the international community to show a positive approach to the issue of excluding Iraq from the Chapter 7 of UN Charter."
Iraq has been under Chapter 7 sanctions since Saddam Hussein's 1990 invasion of Kuwait. The sanctions have never been fully lifted.
Under Chapter VII of the UN Charter, the Security Council can take enforcement measures to maintain or restore international peace and security.
In September 2010, Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said at a meeting with his Iraqi counterpart Hoshyar Zebari on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York that stability in Iraq is an element for stability in the region and underlined the necessity of exiting Iraq from article 7 of the UN Charter.
