On the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in its 65th round, Iraqi President Jalal Talabani met with the UN secretary general Ban Ki-Moon and his accompanied delegation.
They discussed the bilateral relations between Iraq and UN and the UNAMI role in helping the Iraqis to defeat challenges that face the development of the political and democratic processes.
President Talabani briefed the political situations in Iraq, highlighted the political movements among the wining blocs in the elections and emphasized that the Iraqi political leaders are working to form a truly national partnership government that includes all the Iraqi constituents.
For his part, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, the UN chief voiced the joint concern and sense of urgency expressed at a recent meeting with the Foreign Ministers of China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the US at the lack of progress in forming a government more than six months after the national polls were held.
Mr. Ban asked the Iraqi President to encourage political leaders in his country to advance efforts to form a new government through an inclusive and broadly participatory process, reiterating UNAMI’s commitment to assist Iraq, particularly in the areas of human rights and development.
He also said that he hopes Iraq will fulfill its outstanding obligations to Kuwait, pledging the UN’s continued commitment to help the two nations normalize relations.
Later, President Talabani met with his Austrian counterpart Heinz Fischer and his accompanied delegation.
They discussed the bilateral relations between Iraq and Austria and the ways of developing them to strengthen the friendship relations between both countries.
President Talabani briefed the achievements in the security, development and investments fields and said that the new Iraq has became a field of competition between the international companies to participate in the reconstruction and the investments processes.
For his part, President Fischer renewed his country’s stance in supporting Iraq and emphasized Austria’s intent to develop the friendship relations between both countries.
He also praised the major role of President Talabani in the political field in Iraq and the area.
The meetings were attended by Iraqi foreign minister Hoshiyar Zebari, President Talabani’s advisor Fakhri Kareem, MP Najim el-Din Kareem, Iraqi permanent representative to UN Hamid al-Bayati and KRG representative in Washington Qubad Talabani.
