VIENNA, March 5 (KUNA) — Iraq underscored late thursday its support to the efforts of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in combating nuclear armament.

Speaking at the IAEA’s Council of Governors meeting, which concluded last night, head of the Iraqi Foreign Ministry’s International Organizations Department Ambassador Mohammad Al-Mohaimadi said his country respected and complied to international resolutions aimed at halting the spread, development, production, and use of nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons.

However, he criticized the restrictions that prevented Iraq from benefiting from nuclear scientific and technological advancement.

He noted that Iraq had stressed in recent letters that it would comply to international agreements and treaties.
Iraq has been keen on having strong relations with the agency since the fall of the former regime in 2003, he pointed out.
He said that Iraq hoped that IAEA would inform the UN Security Council (UNSC) as soon as possible that Baghdad was in full cooperation with the agency.

The IAEA supports any resolution issued by the UNSC on removing remaining bonds on Iraq, he said.
That stance is greatly appreciated by Iraq and will boost the excellent ties with IAEA, he said.
