U.N. lauds Iraq as alliances take shape
April 1, 2010
UNITED NATIONS, April 1 (UPI) — Iraqi leaders should respect certified election results from the March 7 vote and honor the will of the Iraqi people, the U.N. Security Council said.
Iraqi voters handed the Iraqiya slate of former Prime Minister Iyad Allawi a slim victory over the State of Law coalition of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.
More than 60 percent of eligible Iraqi voters turned out for a vote that was largely peaceful. The U.N. Security Council issued a congratulatory statement for Iraqi elections officials and the Iraqi people for a successful vote.
The Iraqiya victory is in jeopardy, however, as the Justice and Accountability Commission of Shiite leader Ahmed Chalabi tries to disqualify several winning candidates. The commission said several winners from Iraqiya had ties to the outlawed Baath Party.
The Security Council, however, called on “political entities to respect the certified election results and the choices of the Iraqi people.”
It could take several months for Iraq to form a new government as none of the coalitions reached the 163 seats needed on the 325-member Parliament to form a government on its own.
Iranian satellite channel al-Alam reports Maliki is in talks with Chalabi’s Iraqi National Alliance and the Kurdistan Alliance to form a unity slate. Allawi has met with Shiite and Kurdish leaders to develop his own alliance.
