Iraqi parliament suspended indefinitely
June 14, 2010
Iraq’s new parliament has held its first session, more than three months after elections that have thrown the country’s political process into confusion.
Months after Iraqis went to the polls, the country still has no clear government.
None of the four main factions have won the majority needed to rule in their own right, and prime minister Nouri al-Maliki is battling to remain in power.
The alliance led by his key rival Iyad Allawi won the most seats.
The 325-seat parliament’s first task was to elect a new speaker, but even then the different factions wanted more time.
After the national anthem, a recitation from the Koran and the oath of allegiance, the acting speaker declared the session still open but suspended indefinitely.
Some political experts believe a final government could still be months away.
