Zebari: United Nations intervention to resolve the crisis in forming the government is required

(Voice of Iraq) – 22/06/2010

Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari said the «failure» in the formation of the Iraqi government to not find the answers so far, and the continuation of «maneuvers and competion for positions», may require the intervention of the United Nations to assist in reaching an agreement to end the crisis.

Zebari said he considered «the United Nations can help in the process without playing the role of governance».

He said that the withdrawal of U.S. troops from combat in Iraq in the first of September, is closely linked to the success of forming a government in Baghdad.

He added that «the United States denies any link, but I think there is a correlation, if the solution in August and no government is formed after, taking into account the security challenges that we have seen, it might be an embarrassment for Washington».

He also warned that prolonging «bickering» about who should be prime minister would cause more public anger.

He said: «What we’ve seen in Basra Saturday, was a warning, and anger displayed by the demonstrators was unusual», in reference to the demonstrations that erupted in protest against the crisis of electricity.

Zebari said that there was a danger of ambitious politicians, including Prime Minister outgoing Nuri al-Maliki and former Prime Minister Iyad Allawi, to overshadow the demands of the people to basic services.

He added that «the differences on the post of prime minister is one of the main obstacles to progress», according to Agence France-Press
